I've played some form of flute since I was probably eight or nine years old. I grew up listening to these James Galway CDs that I absolutely cherished. I can't remember the exact timing anymore, but I know I got a cheap tin whistle at some point (not pictured below). I thought that was pretty neat, and eventually got a Clarke C whistle, which was quite a step up. At some point, I got a cheap-o plastic fife, which got replaced by a pretty decent wooden fife after a while. I think I got one of them in ("colonial") Williamsburg, VA.

In 5th grade, Mahomet starts its students on their instruments. They've got a top-notch marching band, so they take it pretty seriously. I had a friend, Jeremy, who was in the grade above me and played flute. It was nice to have some precendent for another guy playing the flute (aside from Galway), since all the other flutists were girls, of course. So for me, it was a choice between flute, which I loved, or oboe, which was sufficiently weird that it appealed to me. Of course I ended up playing flute, and sadly have never even tried to play an oboe.
