I'm not quite sure which turn this is coming up. I always felt a little lost through this section. There was this off-camber left-hander as you crested a hill. Lofting over the hill and being off camber means you have practically no traction to turn. It's not even a very sharp corner, but you find yourself sliding uncontrollably to the outside of the corner. You have the sensation of the inevitability of your fate as you hear all four tires screeching across the asphalt, your frantic steering motions going unheeded.

Then the road straightens out, and you try to get back on the racing line, and you think, "Holy crap I need to remember that corner the next time around!" It wasn't until the last lap that I could really anticipate that particular corner.

Rental Car

This was the zippy little car that got us to Nürburg. When we went to pick up our rental car, the guy at the counter was about to give us their last automatic. Jay and I told him that we'd rather have a manual, which I think is something quite uncommon to hear from Americans. So we got this nice six-speed, four-door, diesel Mercedes-Benz A180 instead of a crummy little Citroën.

Ticket Area

This is where you buy your tickets to go around the Ring. Laps are about €20, which was about US$30 at the time. You'd get a magnetic stripe card just like you would on the subway, and when it runs out of laps, the machine at the tollbooth consumes it.

This is also the area to see all the cool cars. We saw a Mercedes-Benz CLK63 AMG Black Series, a Porsche GT3 RS, a few Audi R8s, a Lamborghini Gallardo, a Lotus Elise, a Honda NSX, a couple of Vipers, and gobs of BMW M3s and other fast cars. Of course there were plenty of ordinary cars, too.

One neat feature was the little LED display above the monitor that you can see top center here. It had a map of the course, and the sections that were under caution would flash.

Paddock Scenery

This is one of a number of paddocks (not the main paddock adjacent to the ticketing area) where you can just park your car and admire the scenery. There are walking trails all around the Ring and, I'm told, a few good places to get photos of cars on the track. The track is fenced off, but it seems that people find ways through it; not surprising, considering its length.

Transmission Lines

The drive from Brussels to Nürburg was quite nice, particularly as we got close to the track. One particularly picturesque scene was the fog burning off as the sun came up over a mountain. This is not that scene; this is just some transmission lines that were attractively arranged.

Hop on the Karussell

Yes! Karussell! It's exactly like in Gran Turismo 4, only instead of lounging on my couch, I'm struggling to stay seated properly as we fall down into the steep banking of this long, looping corner. I couldn't believe how fast Theo took us through this turn during our orientation lap. I'm not quite sure why this corner is made of bumpy, lumpy concrete; perhaps asphalt would flow down the slope gradually.

This is the sharpest corner on the Ring, but you can take it very quickly due to the banking. Jay took a bunch of photos through Karussell. The forces and banking are so extreme through it that it tricked the accelerometer in my camera into thinking one shot like this had been taken upright!

I think the sign here says "Go to Hell". The Ring is nicknamed die Grüne Hölle: the Green Hell. About a dozen people die on this track every year.

Looking to Pass

Jay snapped this photo of a car getting ready to pass me. The Ring is, as I understand, just like any other stretch of the Autobahn. It's your job to get out of the way of someone who wants to pass you, and if you get rear-ended, it's your fault for being in the way.

Passing is always on the left, even if you're going around a right-hander, where the racing line (the preferred place to be on the track) is on the right. If you see someone coming up behind you, you can either fight with them to keep them from passing, or you can turn on your right turn signal, indicating you are conceding the pass.

I really wouldn't recommend the former option unless you are comfortable having a high-powered racecar a foot off your rear bumper, floating in and out of your blind spot as you slam on the brakes to get through a corner at eighty miles an hour.

End of Lap

Well, it's over. Take a minute to let your heart rate come back down out of the stratosphere, shake out your hands, and loosen the tension in the seatbelt that has built up over the last thirteen miles.

Ordinarily, this would be the fastest part of the track; a long straightaway going downhill for some two and a half kilometers. But during Touristenfahrten, the straight is where the ticketing area sits, and there is a speed limit once you're past the last corner (note the 90 kph sign at right).

Up ahead, you can see some cones guiding cars back to the paddock on the right. There is also a queue on the left side of the track in the distance where a temporary ticket gate was set up to boost throughput. Jay and I did all six laps (about €120 in "tolls") back-to-back rather than going back into the paddock.

Steep Curb

Here you can see that the blue Renault (the same kind of car that Theo took us around the track in) has passed us. We're still suck behind this Audi, who was just fast enough to keep me from trying to make a move until the very end of the lap.

This corner is called Schwalbenschwanz "dovetail" for how it looks on the map. I had been calling it "Karussell 2" because it has the same steep banking and bumpy concrete as Karussell. But Karussell is over 180 degrees of turning, whereas this is more like 100.

You can see how tall the red and white curbs get here. Theo asked me not to get up onto them; apparently it's pretty easy to blow a tire running into a curb the wrong way.

Pflanzgarten Jump

Oh, this is a fun one. Coming up on Pflanzgarten, you're going downhill and have picked up quite a bit of speed. If you don't get rid of that speed early, you'll find yourself flying--literally--toward the corner, and your brakes won't do much good in the air. So you've got to hit the brakes before the jump, let off while you're in the air, then brake hard once you're back on the ground. If you don't make it through the double right-hander, at least you've got a gravel runoff here.

Hang on Tight

Pro tip: Hands at 9 and 3, not 10 and 2. Having your hands opposite each other on the sides of the steering wheel gives you the maximum amount of turn ability without having to take your hands off the wheel. I think I learned that in my autocross days.

Exmühle Sandy

Okay, maybe I didn't pass this particular Ferrari, but Jay will corroborate that I did in fact pass at least one Ferrari.

Here you can see the sand that was laid down between Kallenhard and Exmühle in an attempt to clean up the diesel that had been spilt along the track during a crash the previous day. The sand was also a reminder that the Nürburgring is, in fact, a public toll road, and that posted speed limits must be obeyed. This was the only stretch while we were there that a speed limit was posted, dropping us down to around 50 kph or so.

A fortunate consequence of the crash and resulting slippery section is that motorcycles were not allowed on the track this day. Motorcycles and cars do not get along well, particularly on racetracks. Cars accelerate slowly but corner quickly, whereas motorcycles accelerate very quickly (less mass) but are slow to corner (fewer tires). The result is that the motorcycle that passes you after the last corner is the same one you're barreling down on as it slows down for the next corner. We didn't have to worry about that back-and-forth.

Bergwerk Terrain

After coming out of the speed-limited section between Kallenhard and Exmühle, we had just enough track to pick up some speed before swinging through the Lauda kink and braking for Bergwerk. Bergwerk feels very similar to Aremberg, only there's no runoff, and you're blinded by trees huddled close to the track.

After Bergwerk is a long stretch of flat-out acceleration bending through a couple of shallow left-handers. After those lefts was the first part of the track where I was not quite sure where we were going, and yet I was taking us there at some 120 miles an hour. By the sixth lap, I had gotten this part straightened out in my head.

It was hard to appreciate at the time, but there are some lovely landscapes to see around the Ring.

Adenauer-Forst

I did not find the quick S-turn at Adenauer-Forst to be very exciting, though it was easy to have too much speed going into it. The track seems wide and forgiving here, and you emerge onto a kind of flat field where the barriers are about as far away from the edges of the track as they ever get.

I didn't even notice that all the corners were labeled until I was looking through photos afterward. Proper names of things are not important when they're coming at you at a hundred miles an hour.

Entering Fuchsröhre

We're about to drop down into Fuchsröhre, the "fox tunnel". You might be interested in reading about how these corners were named.

This is probably the quickest-accelerating stretch of the track, though you won't hit your top speed here. Fuchsröhre is a series of left-right-lefts going steeply down the mountainside. But the corners are shallow enough that you can practically drive in a straight line as the track moves around you.

Even though I'd rather have been driving a manual, it was not so bad having the R32 do the shifting for me here.

Chasing a Ferrari

I do believe I ended up passing this Ferrari. In the end, I think I was passed about twice as often as I did the passing. There was quite a variety of cars, from track-prepared GT racecars to mom and dad's Ford Ka. The correlation between speedy-lookingness and actual driving speed was not exact, certainly. I had more than one dinky-looking Citroën blow past me.

Gravity Well

While there are many places on the Ring where the road drops dramatically away as you go over a hill, this is the one place you get the opposite sensation. It's that feeling you get when you're taking off in an airplane, pulling up sharply, and you're being mashed down into your seat.

This left-hander is the last corner in the Fuchsröhre, heading up toward Adenauer-Forst, and every time we went through it, it was exhilirating. You feel like there's no way the car can go "up" enough to avoid plowing head-on into the surface of the track. But you hold on for dear life, you feel the massive amount of traction bestowed upon you by your vertical inertia, and you slingshot out of the corner.

Aremberg Runoff

Even after slowing down for Schwedenkreuz, you've still got a lot of speed going into Aremberg. It's common enough to go off the track here that they've generously provided a gravel trap to slow you down before you impact the barrier.

Serious Driving

Driving on the Ring is Serious Business. One question I've been asked frequently is, "How fast did you get going?" I'm not quite sure. Watching the speedometer means not watching the road. There are precious few places where I felt safe doing that. I could glance down and see the needle passing 220 kph (about 135 mph) as I continued to accelerate toward Schwedenkreuz (a few corners from where this photo was taken).

Approaching Flugplatz

Here we're about to hit Flugplatz. That means something like "airport", but in my head, it sounds more like "the place (platz) where you go flying (flug)". This is a reasonable interpretation, because you could easily get airborne going over this hill. The trick is that there's a double right-hander right after the hill. It's tough to turn when your wheels aren't on the ground...

Disappearing Road

Schwedenkreuz

At Schwedenkreuz, you are reminded that the same fundamental laws of nature that twisted the earth into these angry shapes are also trying to throw your car off the track. Carry too much speed into the farthest corner you see here (a left-hander), and you will not make it to Aremberg.

At the white symbol you see on the road here, we were probably well past 140 miles per hour.

Twists and Turns

The first few kilometers are quite technical. You can't get through it at a reasonable speed without knowing the course, because you need to be braking for the next corner before you can see it. Fortunately, these first few corners are all generously cambered, and it's hard to carry too much speed into them.

First Corner

Finally, Jay and I were out on the track on our own in our R32. (In fact, I asked Jay to wait until the last lap to take photos so what we could both concentrate on our tasks: me driving and him looking back to warn me of cars coming up to pass us.)

"This is it. I'm on the Nordschleife. There are no exits, no places to pull over. I just need to get through 21 kilometers without crashing. Let's go!"

As soon as I got through the staging area and floored the accelerator, I was in the zone. I had spent many hours (too many, perhaps) lapping this track in Gran Turismo on my PlayStation. Coming up on this first corner, I knew exactly where I was on the track, where the racing line was, and what was coming next.

Helmet Doesn't Fit

Helmets were optional, but Jay and I were interested in having them, after hearing about the incidents (one death and one arm lost) in just the past week. I found one that fit eventually.

Theo would take us around the Ring in his Renault Mégane for an orientation lap before we went at it on our own. It was insane. If I didn't have confidence that Theo knew exactly what he was doing, I would have panicked. This track is full of ups and downs, blind curves, and other cars to avoid. You're trying desperately to brace yourself against the door frame, glove compartment, transmission well--anything!--to prevent yourself from being tossed around the cabin like a ragdoll.

The point where I thought, "Oh God, I might just die here" was when Theo answered his cell phone while screeching around a corner at 80 miles an hour. This was not a hands-free phone. The helmet was not, at this point, reassuring.

Racecar Choices

When we first got to the track around noon, we were told it was closed due to a crash the previous day. The crash had spilled diesel along a kilometer or so of the road, making it dangerously slick. Fortunately, they had been working on cleaning it up, and the track would open around 2pm.

So we called up the wonderful folks at Rent Racecar and arranged to come by and rent a car for a half day. Thankfully we would not need to drive our little rental Mercedes A180 around the track. Rent Racecar has quite a selection, but only a track-prepared BMW 3-series wagon and a Volkswagen R32 were available. I would have much preferred the R32, since the BMW was rear wheel drive, but another customer had already chosen the R32 (an all wheel drive car). Fortunately, Theo (the proprietor) was able to convince them to switch with us.

After handing over €390 and signing the appropriate liability paperwork, we were off to the track...
